The Google Pixel 5 and Google Pixel 4a 5G may have leaked release dates and could go head-to-head with some of Apple's iPhone 12 models this fall
The possible release date comes from 9to5Google (via TechRadar), which accidentally leaked the information earlier thanks to a screenshot of a French blog post from Google announcing the two phones
The screenshot, taken by one of 9to5Google's readers, is in French but reads: "The Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 will be available for pre-order starting October 8, 2020" If you want to put it in your calendar, that's Thursday Keep in mind that the pre-order start date varies by country, so it could be a few days off from when US and UK users can purchase the phones
This pre-order date makes sense because October is typically the month in which Google unveils its latest Pixel devices to the world It also suggests that Google will hold a launch event just before the October 8 launch date
Assuming these dates are correct, Google is not making the Pixel 5 production process as difficult as the standard Pixel 4a; the LTE 4a was just released this week, not in May as expected, and the 5G version is only in October, as was rumored earlier It will not appear
If this October 8 release rumor is true, the Pixel 5 will be dangerously close to the expected iPhone 12 release date Apple has already confirmed that the new models will arrive a bit later than usual, and recent reports suggest that Apple may opt for a staggered rollout, launching two models in the first wave and two more later iPhone is usually released in early to mid-September given that this timeframe could boost one wave of Apple's new phones to at least early October
In a typical year, Google would not just show two Pixel phones at this event Usually titled "Made by Google," the annual fall launch also showcases the latest changes to Google Assistant and new smart home and audio products This year, smart home products like the Chromecast 4 (aka "Sabrina") and a follow-up to last year's Pixel Buds 2 could be announced
