Apple's smallest iPhone 12 is nearly confirmed by a new display option in iOS 14, currently in beta
The proof, 9to5Mac discovered in the third developer beta of iOS 14, was a small update to a modest accessibility setting called Display Zoom
Display Zoom is an Apple feature that makes the iPhone interface larger and easier to navigate This is accomplished by replacing the interface with the next size
For example, on an iPhone 11 Pro Max with Display Zoom enabled, icons and text are resized to appear the same as on the smaller iPhone 11 Pro Doing this on a Max model with a larger screen will make icons and apps appear larger
However, the 58-inch iPhones (iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 Pro) could not take advantage of Display Zoom because there have been no smaller iPhones that use Face ID Therefore, the option to zoom in on the display below the interface designed for 58 inches has not been available on recent iPhones
But that has now changed; assets found in 9to5Mac's Display Zoom analysis show compatibility for viewing the iOS 14 user interface at 2079 x 960 resolution, which is the rumored 54-inch iPhone 12 This is the expected resolution Thus, this is further evidence that a compact iPhone 12 is indeed in the works
By using the iOS Simulator, a Mac tool designed to mimic the IOS interface for developers to see how their apps will look on different iPhones, 9to5Mac was able to simulate a 54-inch iPhone running at a resolution of 2079 x 960 iPhone could be simulated
The IOS 14 interface adapted correctly to this resolution and simulated screen size, providing evidence that Apple has worked to ensure that the IOS interface works correctly with 54-inch displays This confirms that a 54-inch iPhone 12 is on the horizon
When we ran these simulations, we saw a user interface with the same aspect ratio as the 58-inch iPhone X, only with less screen space and lower resolution
The images in this article are a scale comparison of the 54-inch interface versus the 58-inch interface The smaller one is apparently comparable in size to the iPhone SE (2020), except that it has a full-screen display and Face ID notch instead of bezels and a home button
Apple will probably unveil the iPhone 12 series in September, as it has in previous years However, due to coronavirus-related issues, the shipping date may be pushed back to October
The iPhone 12 series will consist of four models, ranging in size from 54" to 67" If rumors are to be believed, all models will feature an OLED display, a new A14 Bionic chip, and a 5G modem
Two of the models will be the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max In addition to other changes, the Pro model will feature a 120Hz "ProMotion" display refresh rate, and the Pro Max is expected to include a LiDAR depth sensor along with three cameras to provide improved photo effects and AR tracking
