The Pixel 4a does not charge faster than the previous Pixel on an 18W charger, but Google is giving it a slightly higher battery capacity of 3,140mAh, according to a recently discovered certification listing
Discovered by DealnTech, Taiwan's National Communications Commission has a listing for a Google phone with the codename G025J
The NCC listing also included an ID number for the Pixel 4a's battery and included charger; DealnTech was able to cross-reference this number with the German TUV Rheinland certification database and found the numbers we mentioned below
We do not expect Google to make any major changes in charging technology with a budget phone like the Pixel 4a That said, the 18W charger is starting to look a bit underpowered, though better than some companies' offerings like Apple's 5W charger packed in the iPhone SE box
Samsung and OnePlus, perhaps Google's two biggest rivals in the Android smartphone space, offer 25W and 30W, respectively; expect faster charging when the Pixel 5 is released later this year
The Pixel 3a's battery was 3,000 mAh, so it is good to see the Pixel 4a with a bit more power capacity at 3,140 mAh The 3,080 mAh "rated capacity" listed in the spec sheet is the minimum guaranteed capacity of the battery However, the 3,140 mAh is more important here because manufacturers always use the higher "standard" capacity when selling their phones
It's not a huge battery, but it is larger than the 1,821 mAh battery that the iPhone SE has, according to an unofficial teardown, so it should at least beat the competition there However, the OnePlus Nord is supposed to have a capacity of around 4,000 mAh, so the Pixel 4a's battery probably won't be enough, unless powerful battery management software squeezes every last drop out of it
There is no evidence here of whether the Pixel 4a will feature wireless charging, as the Pixel 3a did not feature the 18W charging that Google offers on its flagship Pixel, but the iPhone SE does, it has been suggested that Google may also introduce wireless charging in the Pixel 4a However, so far there is no sign of this, except for a single image of the Pixel 4a on a wireless charging pad released by case maker ESR
We have been eagerly awaiting the launch of the Pixel 4a since May, but due to ongoing delays, it will likely be as late as October before we finally see its debut To find out when, check out the new punch-hole display design, a first for a Pixel phone, and how Google has improved on the Pixel 3a's already excellent photography talent
