The iPhone 12 will reportedly be available in four models ranging from 54" to 67", and it seems that Apple is trying to offer something for everyone in this year's lineup And now a new report has confirmed camera details for all four models while revealing three different suppliers
According to Digitimes, LG Innotek, Sharp, and O-film Tech have all received orders for cameras for the iPhone 12 And the number of modules scheduled to ship for each tells us which model Apple expects to sell the most Plus, there are some surprise camera upgrades we haven't heard of before
Sharp and O-film have reportedly won orders for camera modules for the 54-inch iPhone 12 and 61-inch iPhone 12 Max Total shipments are expected to be between 50 and 55 million units
This contrasts with 35-40 million camera modules for the 61-inch iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max LG Innotek is expected to supply cameras for both of these high-end smartphones
As previously reported, according to Digitimes, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will have dual rear cameras, possibly consisting of a wide-angle lens and an ultra-wide angle camera The resolution of the main sensor may jump from 12 MP to 64 MP
The biggest surprise: Digitimes also states that "the wide-angle lens on all new iPhones will be upgraded from 6P to 7P"
The seven-element lens may help reduce chromatic, spherical, and distortion aberrations, but what the additional elements will be used for is not yet clearThe iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature three cameras and an additional telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom (up from 2x) They should also feature a new LiDAR ToF sensor, which should provide better performance in the iPhone's AR app and possibly better photography performance
Overall, Digitimes says iPhone 12 shipments will likely reach 70 million units in 2020, with the 61-inch model leading the way, accounting for 50% of shipments The 54-inch model will account for 30-35% of shipments, and the 67-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, the most expensive and largest, will account for 15-20%, according to the magazine
