Less than a week before OnePlus unveils the phones at its April 14 launch event, new spec lists for the upcoming OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro have appeared online
WinFuture has published most of the details for both models, echoing much of what we heard from an earlier OnePlus 8 spec leak posted by Ishan Agarwal in late MarchWinFuture's report reveals that the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro highlight some of the main differences between the two models Both models are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 5G chipset, but the Pro model appears to have a faster 120Hz display and wireless charging, a first for a OnePlus phone The standard OnePlus 8 will only have a 90Hz panel and wired charging
The OnePlus 8 Pro will also feature a higher-spec quad-lens camera, with 48-megapixel wide and ultra-wide lenses, an 8MP telephoto lens, and a special 5MP sensor designed to eliminate color flicker when shooting video The lower-priced model will have one less camera, adding a 16MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro shooter to the primary 48MP wide optics
The addition of wireless charging to the OnePlus 8 Pro will be significant for fans of the company's devices In the past, OnePlus has always downplayed the importance of this technology, claiming that charging speeds are simply not fast enough to be worthwhile and that customers can enjoy a better experience with the ultra-fast Warp Charge wired system
From the looks of it, OnePlus has devised a way to make wireless charging much more efficient than ever before Typically, "fast" wireless charging resides in the 10-15 watt range, but OnePlus is apparently pushing twice that much power through induction, according to these leaks Photos of the company's leaked charging stand show a bulky design with a fan on the back
The Pro's fast display is also a notable advantage for this model: at 120Hz, the OnePlus 8 Pro's quad HD+ AMOLED screen offers twice as fast animations as seen from a traditional phone display Samsung's Galaxy S20 series also has a 120Hz panel, but the smoother refresh rate naturally drains the battery faster
Finally, WinFuture claims that the OnePlus 8 Pro will be IP68 waterproof certified, promising that the device can withstand being submerged in up to 5 feet of water for 30 minutes This is interesting given OnePlus' aversion to IP-grade water resistance over the past few years Handset makers have in the past argued against IP ratings because their certification could add money to the price of the handset and provide the same resistance without official testing
Obviously, there has been a change of heart with the more expensive OnePlus handsets this year, so we'll see if OnePlus still insists on protection for the standard model, or if all caution regarding water resistance is reserved for the Pro this time around
Of course, with all these luxuries included, the OnePlus 8 Pro is expected to be priced significantly higher than the standard model, with a rumored price tag of $800 This is only $100 less than the Galaxy S20
OnePlus has been continually upmarket over the past few product cycles, gradually eroding its value advantage over other flagships, so a higher price for the OnePlus 8 Pro would not be particularly surprising Hopefully, the standard OnePlus 8 will be a more economical proposition, like the OnePlus devices we've loved in the past
