Can't find the Nvidia RTX 3080 back in stock or an RTX 30 series laptop? Many of you probably do The good news is that an all-AMD gaming laptop with the powerful Radeon RX 6800M GPU built in may be on the way
This is according to a tweet from gaming hardware leak regular @TUM_APISAK, who claims that the popular Asus ROG Strix G15 may come in an all-AMD configuration That means a combination of the powerful Ryzen 9 5900HX processor and an unannounced Radeon RX 6800M
Previously, the ROG Strix laptop combined a Ryzen mobile chip with Nvidia's new GeForce RTX 30 series laptop graphics card So a machine powered entirely by AMD hardware would be a first for that line of laptops
Although currently very difficult to purchase thanks to the semiconductor shortage, the combination of AMD Ryzen processors and the latest Nvidia graphics has proven to be very successful in a series of gaming laptops However, it is still worth getting excited about a fully AMD-based gaming laptop
Mobile versions of the GeForce RTX 30 series tend to be significantly inferior to their desktop counterparts due to a noticeable gap in the amount of power a laptop GPU can draw compared to a full-fat desktop graphics card However, this does not seem to be the case for mobile Radeon 6000 GPUs
As our colleagues at TechRadar point out, the rumored Radeon RX 6800M will have 40 commuting units, the same amount as a full-blown desktop RX 6800 Comparatively, the mobile Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 would be comparable to the desktop version of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, as well as most other RTX 30 series cards, are so difficult to find where to buy that gaming laptops with such GPUs have flown off the shelves Therefore, the addition of gaming laptops with the latest Ryzen and Radeon hardware could provide an alternative to AMD + Nvidia laptops
Still, if AMD gaming notebooks can deliver overwhelming performance on high-load titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, avid gamers fed up with the lack of desktop hardware may be tempted to buy these notebooks Nevertheless, we still hope that this will bring more competition to the mobile graphics arena, and that both AMD and Nvidia will release enhanced versions of their laptop-grade GPUs
