If you've been waiting to buy the best cheap TV for football season but haven't found one that will adequately fill your walls, there's good news. TV maker Vizio is finally ready to hit the gridiron with its "2023" series of budget 65- and 75-inch TVs that won't make your wallet bulge.
Simply called the Vizio Quantum 4K QLED Smart TV, the series includes a larger 65-inch version priced at $499 (link to Walmart) and a super-large 75-inch screen size priced at $699 (link to Walmart).
In terms of features, the Quantum 4K QLED offers Dolby Vision Bright+, full array LED backlighting, and active pixel tuning, plus variable refresh rates, up to 120 FPS at 1080p for gamers seeking higher frame rates The system will also be available in a variety of colors. Finally, on the sound side, the Quantum 4K has Dolby Audio DTS:X and Virtual:X on-board, as well as Dolby Atmos and DTS-X pass-through when connected to the best soundbar or speaker system.
For streaming sports instead of watching them on cable or broadcast, Vizio says the Quantum 4K QLED has Wi-Fi 6 and also supports Airplay 2.0 and Chromecast. It also features Vizio's latest smart platform, Home Screen, which recently added the ESPN app. [The Hisense U6K offers many of the same features for $799; the main difference between the two models is that the Hisense uses Google TV and mini LED backlighting, while the Vizio uses its own home screen platform and sticks to full array LEDs.
Having seen a bit of both at various events this year, I was more drawn to the Hisense than the Vizio. Hopefully, that will be the case next month.
Another option in the mid-range TV world is the TCL QM8, which at $1,300 for 65 inches is quite expensive, but I have no doubt that the QM8 will beat both the U6K and Vizio Quantum in most key performance metrics.
Despite strong competition, however, Vizio appears to be bringing the price of large-screen TVs down to a new affordable level.
As long as you keep your expectations low, such as not expecting Samsung S95C OLED-level performance from a $700 TV, the Vizio may be worth putting in your living room this season. That said, if you already have one of the best TVs in your living room, the Vizio could become a second TV in your basement.
