What better movie to watch than one named after the spooky season itself? “Halloween “(the new 2018 version) is a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 classic ‘Halloween,’ ignoring all the events of the previous sequels The film follows Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), who has lived alone for 40 years, haunted by the memory of Michael Myers, the masked killer who terrorized her and her friends in Haddonfield on Halloween night 1978
Laurie has spent decades building an almost bunker-like house filled with traps and weapons in preparation for Michael's return His relationship with his daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allison (Andi Matichuk) is strained by his obsession with her protection and survival
When Michael escapes during a move to a new facility, he returns to Haddonfield and wreaks havoc on Halloween night Finally ready for the confrontation he's been waiting for for years, Laurie has a brutal showdown with his former nemesis

What sets “You're Next” apart from other home invasion films is an unexpected turn of events when Erin (Shani Vinson), the girlfriend of one of the family members, turns out to have unique survival skills Raised in a survivalist environment, Erin is far more capable than the intruders anticipated and uses her brutal and creative methods to turn the tables on them

The trilogy doesn't count as a movie, so I'm cheating a bit, but I really wanted to include it The “Fear Street” trilogy is an essential film for me around Halloween time These films are easy to watch and perfect for those who need something a little lighter (though still scary and sometimes gross)
The trilogy consists of Fear Street Part I: 1994, Fear Street Part II: 1978, and Fear Street Part III: 1666 All of these are interrelated and tell a vast horror story spanning three centuries At the center of the trilogy is the cursed town of Shadyside, which has been plagued by brutal murders for centuries
In part one, a group of teenagers led by Deena (Kiana Madeira) discover that a series of recent murders are related to a centuries-old curse that has haunted the town Part 2 delves deeper into the history of the curse, taking place in a summer camp massacre reminiscent of a Friday the 13th-like slasher The survivors of the first film seek out the individuals who survived this massacre in order to understand the origins of the curse Finally, the third part returns to the origins of the curse, revealing the dark truth about the town's history and its connection to witchcraft

“The Platform” is a good choice for those who don't like pure horror films It's still unsettling, but not enough to put you off This Spanish dystopian horror thriller is set in a vertical prison called “The Pit,” and the film revolves around a unique and terrifying food distribution system The prison consists of several levels, with two prisoners per level, and each day a platform filled with food is lowered from top to bottom
Often, however, the prisoners on the upper levels get to eat first, leaving little or nothing for the prisoners on the lower levels The deeper the hierarchy, the worse the situation becomes, leading to despair, violence, and starvation The story follows Goren (Ivan Masage), a man who voluntarily entered prison in exchange for a diploma As he moves between different hierarchies, he witnesses the brutal survival instincts that result from the unequal distribution of resources and tries to promote change by advocating for a more equitable distribution of food
The long-awaited sequel, The Platform 2, also recently appeared on Netflix
