If you are looking for a charming movie that will lift your spirits and make you shed happy tears, look no further than Prime Video's “gifted/gifted” This delightful film is currently available on the popular streaming service and is making a big impression on subscribers
As of this writing (Wednesday, September 18), “gifted” has vaulted to the top of Prime Video's Top 10 Movies list This 2017 film currently holds the #1 spot, beating out blockbusters such as “The Beekeeper” and “Transformers” It also held the top spot for several weeks, surpassing even the prime original “Jackpot!” which held the top spot for several weeks
If you're looking for a heartwarming movie to watch on Prime Video this week, “gifted” is an obvious choice Here's why this comforting drama is guaranteed to lift your spirits
Frank Alder (Chris Evans) is a former philosophy teacher and now a boat mechanic raising his young niece Mary (McKenna Grace) in a coastal Florida town The two enjoy a seemingly ordinary life, but when 7-year-old Mary demonstrates mathematical abilities far beyond her age Frank recommends that Mary be transferred to a school for gifted children
However, Frank is determined to give Mary a “normal” childhood and does not want her to follow the same path as her gifted but troubled mother However, when Frank's mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), notices her granddaughter's academic talents, she insists that Mary's abilities are not in vain and threatens to separate them because Frank is not a fit guardian for a gifted child
One of the greatest strengths of “gifted/gifted” is its very likable characters Chris Evans gives a seriously engaging performance as the de facto father trying to raise his niece, a role that tries to strike the right balance between letting Mary shine and protecting her from the pitfalls her mother has fallen into McKenna Grace is also excellent as the precocious Mary, and the two have great chemistry, playing off each other well and engaging in some very entertaining (and quite funny) banter
The supporting cast, from Jenny Slate as Mary's homeroom teacher and Frank's love interest to Octavia Spencer as their friendly neighbor, is equally pleasing Even Lindsay Duncan as Evelyn is a character to like Yes, Evelyn is the closest thing to a villain in the film, but her motivations are understandable and surprisingly reasonable
“gifted/gifted” was criticized by some critics for its largely predictable plot (which is why the film holds a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which I think is far too low) There is no denying that the story is predictable, but when a mild comedy with such likable characters hits so well, the lack of twists and turns is hardly a major problem In fact, the relatively straightforward storyline adds to the film's watchability It is also clear that audiences like the film more than critics, with a fairly generous 85% audience rating
So if you're feeling a little blue from the workload, “gifted/gifted” may be just the tonic you're looking for This simple but very sweet comedy-drama is perfect for when you need a movie to cheer you up, and is sure to leave you smiling by the end
