Based on the comic of the same name by Sarah Vallon, Robot Dreams is one of last year's Oscar nominees that I've been dying to see since I missed it in theaters I love quiet, poignant animated films that slice of life, and everything I've heard so far about “Robot Dreams” has convinced me to sit down, grab a tissue, and prepare to be emotionally torn to shreds by the animated characters

Set in 1980s Manhattan, “Robot Dreams” follows the heartwarming friendship between an anthropomorphic dog and his mail-order robot best friend The two become inseparable during the summer, but tragedy strikes when the robot rusts and stops working after a day at the beach Dog is forced to leave his best friend there for the night, but when he returns the next day with tools to fix the robot, the beach is closed until the following summer What follows is a heartfelt exploration of friendship as it is portrayed in various forms throughout our lives

I was a big fan of “Shrek” as a kid, but by the time the first “Puss in Boots” film came out, I was off target So you can imagine my surprise last year when my anime geek friends all started praising “Puss in Boots: A Last Wish”

A bit skeptical, I finally sat down and watched it And I agree with my colleague Rory Mellon: “Puss in Boots: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” doesn't qualify as such a great film Not a clichéd spin-off, it sharply reimagines the characters with the best animation since “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” blending 3D and 2D animation, lushly rendered backgrounds, stylized visuals, and vibrant colors that evoke a fairy-tale illustrated evoke the sensation of fairy tale illustrations Antonio Banderas returns as the famous feline, along with Kitty, played by Salma Hayek The film also features new fairy tale friends including the delightfully wicked Jack Horner (John Mulaney), Cockney Goldilocks (Florence Pugh), and her crime family the Three Bears (Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo)

The 2010s flood of new YA sci-fi dramas like “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” were long overdue The new Netflix movie “Uglies,” based on Scott Westerfeld's novel of the same name, is unlikely to reach the same heights as its predecessor, but it may still be a hit with the tweens and teens around you

Set hundreds of years in the future, “Uglies” imagines a dystopian society straight out of “The Twilight Zone,” where every 16-year-old has to undergo cosmetic surgery to become a “beauty” Then they would be free to live an Instagram-perfect life on the condition that they are as “beautiful” as everyone else Somehow, it is also a solution to class inequality and climate change Joey King's Tally Youngblood is a teen who has been waiting for a makeover, but loses her best friend to the “Pretties”

Keira Knightley as Sydni-Gabrielle Collette in the title role brings the 20th century writer to life in this exhilarating, sharp, and moving literary biopic Colette, a young woman from rural France, is whisked away to marriage by a secular self-styled “literary entrepreneur” known simply as Willy (Dominic West)

She begins writing a semi-autobiographical novel under his name, and as it succeeds (and her husband's wandering eye becomes a constant thorn in their relationship), she fights to make her talent known to the world and to gain recognition as a writer herself All the while, there is no shortage of domestic drama, including a scene in which Colette and Willie have an affair with the same woman
