Netflix Sets Release Date for Critically Acclaimed New Drama - 93% Rated on Rotten Tomatoes

“Wicked Little Letters” brought big laughs to Netflix just a few days ago, and now a new Sony Pictures Classic will be available soon

The previous film was a hilarious British period comedy, but the new arrival is writer/director Minhal Beig's acclaimed third feature film, We Grown Now Hage's new film follows the acclaimed 2019 Apple TV Plus film “Hala,” about young black friendship and life inside Chicago's Cabrini Green apartment complex

Thanks to When To Stream, the film will be streaming within a few weeks and will arrive on October 3, 2024 Based on the film's reputation, it should be added to the Netflix watch list As of this writing, the film has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics are particularly impressed

Here is a little more information about the film and a summary of the accolades “We Grown Now” has garnered so far

Minhal Beig's “We Grown Now” is a period drama set in Chicago in 1992 In it, two boys, Eric (Gian Knight Ramirez) and Malik (Blake Cameron James), are introduced

The two dreamers are tightly bonded and fill their days by roaming the streets together and entertaining each other as much as possible At this point, the public housing where they live is a challenging environment, with complications and threats of separation testing their friendship and community

In addition to Ramirez and James, the cast includes Jurnee Smollett, Lil Lil Howery, Ora Jones, Avery Holliday, and S Epasa Merkerson

Given the high RT score, it will come as no surprise to learn that critics have praised “We Grown Now”

Tomlis Loughry of Variety called the film “a thoughtful, gently paced tale of Chicago upbringing” and added: “The immersive beat and warmly colored visuals sneak up on the viewer

Writing in The Hollywood Reporter, Rovia Gyalkey found some flaws in the film's structure-“There's not much of a narrative, and as a result, ‘We Grown Now’ struggles”-but “takes beauty seriously and constructs Cabrini-Green's life as a project that “makes small pleasures seem deceptively easy

In a 35/4 review on RogerEbertcom, Peyton Robinson praised “We Grown Now” as a “painfully engaging” story and (like many other critics) singled out James and Ramirez's excellent performances: “James and Ramirez are work brilliantly as the duo at the heart of the film The chemistry between the boys as best friends is believable, between innocently playing dozens, trumping class, contemplating love and life with charming naivete, and even navigating the increasingly complex emotions that arise from their contemptuously eroding social and political consciousness It is what it is [Through [Eric and Malik's] perspectives, beautifully illuminated by Blake Cameron James and Gian Knight Ramirez's portrayals, we see a neighborhood that combines promise and despair become a playground for their imaginations We Grown Now is a film about a child's eyes We Grown Now is a satisfying film that allows us to experience our hometown through the eyes of a child”

If you missed it earlier this year, “We Grown Now” will be available on Netflix beginning Thursday, October 3, 2024 Need some entertainment in the meantime? We've compiled a list of the best Netflix movies and the best Netflix shows, so find out what's next
