You should not judge a book by its cover or a movie by its terrible title. When I heard that Prime Video was getting a new comedy film called "My old ass," I thought it was going to be a silly 10th-generation movie full of Gen-Z slang and crappy life lessons. I was wrong...Well, maybe not about the second part, but about the cringe factor that is definitely (benevolently) kept at an absolute minimum.
"My Old Ass" landed on Prime Video this week (on Thursday, Nov. 7) Following a very low theatrical run (my local cinema held exactly one screening of it), I found it to be easy to watch, with all the elements to attract subscribers of the streaming service's most watched re-prime video, and only 89 minutes long.
If you're looking for something fresh to watch on Prime Video over the weekend, "My Old Ass" (the title doesn't stop being terrible) should be your next viewer.
"My Old Ass" is an adult comedy drama in which 18-year-old Elliot (Maisy Stella) experiences a mushroom journey that will change her life forever. After sampling the psychedelic substance with her two best friends, she wakes up the next morning with her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza
) giving her a single grim warning, and Elliot initially assumes it was all a mushroom-induced dream, but she then visits her family's Cranberry farm [over the summer]. 9]
Then, rethinking her approach to sexuality, family, and away from her childhood home, Elliott's encounter with her future self gives her a new perspective. But at the same time, she also needs to try really, really hard not to fall in love with Chad.
The greatest strength of "My old ass" is its likability. Maisy Stella plays Elliot as a little cocky and immature (she's only 18 years old.As well as gentle of heart and easy to root for. She is a charming lead, and the character's good-natured sense extends to the rest of the film as well. There's no sinister villain here, or even a dramatic betting method, instead of "my old ass" just kind of skipping, for its entire running time, letting most of it hang out with a charismatic cast.
If the movie wasn't quite zippy, very low stakes could have been a problem, just down to its refreshing runtime and while the stakes aren't high, there's something to at least keep you hooked, as Chad will be able to give her young Daughter to an older Elliot in the future. While the ultimate answer to a good self is somewhat predictable, it's still satisfying and reveals great results in the movie's best scenes.
If part of "my old ass" was leaving me a little cold, it's the whole message of "living a life for a moment.""This is a very worn・out place for this genre, especially adult comedy, and writer/director Megan Park says nothing new about the subject, which makes for an ending note that fails to connect emotionally. But if you're looking for a simple comedy, it's hard to see "my old ass" let you down.
"My Old Ass" has steadily attracted positive reviews since it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on May 1 of this year. The review site Rotten Tomatoes has 91 reviews, with a critical approval rating of 171%. And just as impressively, its audience score has also been as high as 500% from 89 ratings.
Chicago leader Kylie Boulter called it a "surprisingly deep adult comedy," and Arizona Republic's Bill Goodycunz said, "It'll make you cry," and "I don't agree with the latter sentiment, but I thought the film was sweet, but my tear ducts could be at risk of rupturing." It was not. But the wailing viewer may have shed a few tears in the third act.
"Very rarely the movie is forced and can't capture the energy of Gen Z without feeling cringey, but my old ass can get it right — our Jort wearing hero Elliot proves it," says Saskia Morrison of Time Out. Thiagu said. On the other hand,クリスティLemireのRogerEbert.com Label it "real" and declared director Megan Park "breathe new life into the familiar genre.""
On the other hand, the Wall Street Journal's Zachary Burns is not a fan," "My Old Ass" goes from a slimy comedy to a totally synthetic Nicholas Sparks-esque emotionalism, all about 90 minutes, twisting the mediocrity properly enough for this time. — It seems to be stretching for years.
If you're a bit burned out by the thrillers and action movies that have dominated Prime Video's new movie library mostly in recent weeks, "My Old Ass" may be the tonic you've been craving. It's a perfect fun adulthood comedy with likeable characters and good-natured stories. It's not the most ambitious movie, but it plays on its strength and is very affectionate.
I think the short runtime of the film will also be a plus for many potential viewers. I can't count the number of times my family asked me for a movie recommendation, but in particular I asked them to give me a "short movie."Overall, "My Old Ass" certainly has a lot to go for it, even if it's probably never to be remembered as one of the best movies of the year.
