The iPhone 12 is almost here, and Apple is expected to unveil four new handsets with many upgrades at the big Apple event next week: an OLED screen, 5G, a faster A14 Bionic chip, and a better camera are expected However, there is one wish list that will likely not materialize
The iPhone 12 should have a fresher design with squared edges and new color options, but a smaller notch on the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max It seems unlikely However, according to a new leak, iPhone 13 could be a different story
According to a very rough illustration by Ice Universe on Twitter, the iPhone 13 will "continue the notch design, but the notch will be shorter" We have heard other rumors that Apple could offer a true full-screen phone with the iPhone 13, but at least this seems like a step in the right direction
Meanwhile, the best Android phones feature a small punch hole toward the top of the display, giving more area for content than Apple's iPhone notch To be fair, however, the iPhone's notch is equipped with a high-performance TrueDepth camera used for Face ID
In April of this year, Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech noted that the iPhone 12 notch may be reduced in size as Apple moves the speaker out of the top center of the design and places it in the top bezel of the phone Perhaps this is the plan for the iPhone 13
We have also heard that Apple may be working on a completely portless iPhone This would be the most radical (and controversial) iPhone redesign in years
The holy grail of smartphone design seems to be true full-screen design, and one way to achieve that is to offer an under-display camera; ZTE's Axon 20 5G, announced in August, appears to be one of the first phones to go this route However, Samsung is working on an under-display camera as well, but there is some debate as to whether it will be ready for the Galaxy S21
Based on what we know so far, the iPhone 12 should represent an evolution of Apple's design, but the iPhone 13 could be a major departure
