The iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro may feature a 120Hz refresh rate display, but may not at launch
This is according to tech leaker iAppleTimes, which claims that it has been "confirmed" that the 67-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max will have a 120Hz display The leaker also states that the standard 61-inch iPhone 12 Pro may also feature a 120Hz display, although this cannot be guaranteed
We expect the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max to feature the A14 Bionic chip, a new design with flatter edges, and a triple rear camera array with an additional LiDAR sensor However, a question mark was raised as to whether the next generation of high-end Apple phones will feature the high refresh rate displays that have become a common feature on premium Android phones like the Galaxy S20 series and OnePlus 8 Pro
However, rumors have since surfaced that only the Pro handsets will feature high refresh rate displays
Ross Young, a display supply chain analyst and frequent leaker of cell phone information, claimed that no iPhone 12 model would feature a 120 Hz display due to a lack of display hardware for high refresh rates However, other leakers continued to claim that the iPhone 12 Pro will have a 120Hz screen
Twitter user @abjornx recently found a "limit frame rate" option in the iOS 14 beta that limits the display to a maximum of 60 Hz, suggesting that the display exceeds that Young said this does not mean that the iPhone 12 will have a high refresh rate display, nor will it have an LTPO panel that allows for dynamic refresh rates [But now a leak from iAppleTimes that the iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature at least a 120 Hz refresh rate has added further fuel to the rumor that the Pro model will feature such a screen
Young said that a 120Hz refresh rate display could delay the launch of the iPhone 12 Pro model However, he also backed his guns, stating that he has heard that the iPhone 12 series will launch with a 60Hz display
Jon Prosser, a regular Apple leaker, also weighed in on the topic, tweeting that Apple "should not give up on 120Hz for the Pro just yet" He added that the iPhone 12 Pro model will not have an LTPO panel, but will have a ProMotion display like the 120Hz panel on the iPad Pro 2020
Prosser said that he has "ample evidence" from his sources that the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will likely have 120Hz displays
All of this is rather confusing and tricky to follow However, with rivals like Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra incorporating this technology, it seems wrong for Apple not to adopt a higher refresh rate for its next-generation Pro iPhone
Since the iPhone 12 series is likely to be unveiled in September, it seems clear that it will be quite soon However, due to the disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak, the actual release of some models may be delayed by a month or so
