Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X have generated a lot of online press, but when it comes down to it, most people will not buy two $500 (or so) consoles in the same month So fans and analysts want to know: which console will be more popular at launch? According to a new survey, the answer is the PS5, with a ratio of almost 6:1
MCV reports that this information comes from pop culture marketing agency Experience12 The company surveyed more than 3,000 fans of MCM Comic-Con, a large sci-fi and fantasy convention held (usually) in London, and asked them which next-generation game console they were most excited about
The answer, by an overwhelming majority, was the PS5: 84%, versus 15% for the Xbox Series X Apparently, the fans, or at least the British fans, spoke up
What is interesting, however, is that while gamers are very excited about the PS5, they do not seem to be particularly enthusiastic about PS5 games The survey also asked what games they were most excited about By far the most popular answer was CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077, which is not strictly a next-gen game, even though it will be released on next-gen consoles
In fact, all of the anticipated games on the list will be released on PS4 or Xbox One, with "Marvel's Avengers" coming in second (suggesting that the general public is more excited about this game than the Twitter crowd) and "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 Remaster," and fourth was "Dying Light 2"
Perhaps this survey is representative of what will actually happen in November, perhaps not, but the methodology is sound Generally speaking, survey respondents ranged in age from 18 to 34 and were predominantly, but not overwhelmingly, male Statistically speaking, surveys with more than 1,000 respondents tend to be more reliable and represent the thoughts of the general population
Whether this excitement translates into sales data is another matter entirely However, these numbers could vary greatly depending on what Sony and Microsoft announce between now and the console's launch date
It is also worth noting that the responses reflect current attitudes toward gaming consoles Fifty-nine percent of respondents claimed that the PS4 is currently their favorite console, while only 16% favored the Xbox One
On the one hand, these numbers seem interesting and well-researched; on the other hand, we all know what Mark Twain said about lies, damned lies, and statistics However, if this research is correct, Sony may need to offer more units at launch than Microsoft
