The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is our favorite foldable ever released, but we recently heard that a new version with 5G is on the horizon, and thanks to a post from Samsung China via TechRadar, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 G's true identity is becoming clear
The phone maker reportedly shared a graphic on Chinese social networking site Weibo with the phone's name next to the date July 22 (though the link is not available without an account) It reads, "New Trend Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G, July 22 New colors planned Stay tuned"
The significance of this date is not clear from the poster It could be an early reveal for the Chinese market, or it could be a pre-order start date in that region But either way, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is likely to be officially announced in some form mid-week
Now, we already suspected this phone was just around the corner Unpacked 2020, the mobile event at which Samsung has already confirmed that it will unveil its "five power devices," is scheduled to take place on August 5 But the proximity of these two dates has us scratching our heads
Of course, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is not the only star of the show at Unpacked Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra will finally be seen in person, as will Samsung's Galaxy Fold 2, presumably under the new name Galaxy Z Fold 2 Samsung is likely to brand the Galaxy Z as an ultra high-end or foldable line in the future
Compared to these devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will be more like a patch on existing models that only support 4G LTE networks than a new generation of Samsung's clamshell foldable to enable 5G support, the Z Flip 5G will feature an all-new system-on-chip, likely Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865+, but the rest of the device, from the ultra-thin glass-covered display to the dual-lens rear camera, is expected to remain unchanged
The original Galaxy Z Flip cost $1,380 when it launched earlier this year, but it is not clear how expensive Samsung intends to make the 5G variant It could all depend on whether the handset maker intends to keep its existing models If so, that would leave room for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G to appear at an even higher price for more discerning users who want to ensure they have a 5G-enabled phone for years to come
But we won't have to wait long for answers; July 22 is only two days away, and if we don't hear about Z Flip 5G then, we will certainly know on August 5
