As good as the iPhone SE 2020 is, its weak point is battery life If that's a major concern for you, don't fret The upcoming Samsung Galaxy M41 budget smartphone will have a capacity of almost 7,000 mAh and will probably cost about $100 less
Twitter user the_tech_guy posted evidence of 6,800 mAh cells taken from a regulatory list kept by the Korea Institute for Chemical Convergence Testing (via Max Weinbach) The Galaxy M41 is the successor to the $300 Samsung Galaxy M31, which was released earlier this year with a 6,000 mAh battery
While the capacity is impressive, the maximum charging speed of 15W is not It is certainly better than the default charging speed of the 5W charging block on the iPhone SE But we'd prefer something like the 25W block that comes with the Galaxy S20 series, which can fill the M41's tank quickly
The $400 iPhone SE's tiny battery is minuscule at 1,821 mAh according to an unofficial teardown, but thanks to Apple's highly optimized iOS software, battery life punches well above its weight However, given that the average capacity of a smartphone is about 4,000 mAh, it is impossible for Apple's latest budget iPhone to keep up with a similarly priced Android smartphone
However, the Galaxy M41's battery will not be the largest battery we have seen in a cell phone That honor goes to the 18,000 mAh monster that was the Energizer Phone Power Max P18K Pop This phone is no longer available and was not well reviewed when we purchased it So 6,800 mAh will have to do for now
Since the Galaxy M41 is a Samsung phone, the question arises as to why Samsung would not put this battery in one of their flagships The upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series will certainly benefit from a battery of this size, as will next year's Galaxy S30; even the Note 20 Ultra battery, rumored to be the largest in the Galaxy Note 20 series, is 5,000 mAh never exceeds 5,000 mAh
However, there is literally no room in a smartphone for every desirable feature The Galaxy Note series has always represented the best phone technology Samsung has to offer
However, the M41 is a budget device and will probably be targeted at those who are looking for power and cost efficiency rather than the latest and greatest smartphone technology Therefore, a larger battery makes sense for such a device
The Galaxy Note 20 is expected to make an appearance next month, probably at an event on August 5 The Galaxy M41 will not actually appear until next year, but if you want a device under $400 right now, there are many other excellent budget phones
