The Google Pixel 5 may look like an evolution of the Pixel 4, rather than a completely different phone, as the latest design renderings show
Created by Sarang Sheth of Yanko Design, these new concept design images are based on leaks and rumors surrounding the Pixel 5 and the established Pixel phone aesthetic However, there is one major and perhaps jarring feature
From the front, this concept Pixel 5 appears to be little more than a Pixel 4 with a few improvements The top bezel appears to be a bit slimmer and sleeker than the Pixel 4's larger bezel, which is used to hold the phone's face-scan sensor and Soli radar chip This design suggests that Google may have found a way to shrink the sensors and chip, making the bezel much less screen-eating than before
The display itself appears flat, but the glass edges of the screen appear to be slightly curved This makes the Pixel 5 easier to hold than its predecessor, and also avoids false touch detection, since the touchscreen is not on the edge
As for the edges, the Pixel 5 appears to be the same as usual Smoothly curved sides, a colorful power button on the right-hand side, and a USB-C port at the bottom edge of the phone
But turn the phone over (albeit virtually) and you can see a new camera module This follows rumors that the Pixel 5 will feature a triple camera array, but while some might have expected a sleek, square camera module, Shes put in a U-shaped camera bump
This bump is the same height as the Pixel 5's colorful glass back and appears flatter The orientation of the three lenses, however, looks to us like a slightly surprised robot face
We saw something similar on the Pixel 3 XL's dual-camera display notch, which also looked like two robot eyes staring at the user Depending on the camera bump, and your feelings about robots, Sheth's take on the Pixel 5's design may be one you may like, or one you may quickly shun
While there is an argument for a proper premium Pixel phone that rivals the likes of the iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy S20 Ultra in terms of design and materials, the Pixel 5 could come with less than flagship specs In other words, it could fall further below the aforementioned Apple and Samsung phones in terms of price, thereby justifying keeping the rather utilitarian Pixel design
