In the immediate shadow of HBO's "Watchmen" episode 9, we already want to know if there is a "Watchmen" season 2 As expected, we're entering spoiler territory, so finish Season 1 if you haven't already Also, somehow things are even more confusing
The big question I have about "Watchmen" Season 2 concerns its plot The traditional process is a continuation of Season 1, but it could explore different characters in the "Watchmen" world
Initially, the answer was "probably" Not so now; USA Today spoke with HBO programming chief Casey Bloys, who said that "Watchmen" showrunner Damon Lindelof ("Lost," "The Leftovers") has declined to return And since Lindelof is credited with much of the show's success, Bloys and HBO are not moving forward, and the executive said, "It's hard to imagine doing this show without Damon being involved in some way"
Lindelof told Variety, "I'm going to put up my antenna and see if we're receiving anything If I don't receive anything within a reasonable period of time, I'm going to go to If it's not me, I guess I'll move on to your question of who it is"
He also told USA Today that he has "approved" HBO to pursue the show with another team With the finale drawing a season-high 16 million viewers, HBO may take that option if the right showrunner emerges
Then, in mid-February 2020, HBO "reclassified" Watchmen No longer a drama, but a limited series, "Watchmen" opened the door for HBO to "all future possibilities," Variety reported the news
According to Angela Aber herself, Regina King, the plot of the second season of "Watchmen" is completely undecided Could it possibly be Mars, or could it be a distraction? The actress told Vulture that "[Lindelof] doesn't even seem to have an idea for the entrance and ending of the second season"
While it is foreseeable that the second season will continue on from the first, we don't see the season one finale ending in a cliffhanger--Lindelof told Vulture that she believes Angela will not sink to the bottom of the pool
Unfortunately, that's not the case If you want to see the rest of Watchmen, you'll have to reread the graphic novel or rewatch the first season (both of which I intend to do)
Regina King expressed interest in returning, but told Vulture that she hopes the project will be just fine
Thanks to the magic of flashbacks, anyone could come back for round two, but let's start with the remaining characters on the board
Adrian Veit/Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons), Laurie Blake/Cirque Spectre II (Jean Smart), and Wade Tillman/Looking Glass (Tim Blake Nelson) are all alive and Angela Abar/ Sister Knight (Regina King), and grandfather Will Reeves/Hooded Justice (Louis Gossett, Jr)
It's pretty safe to assume that Lady Trieu (Hong Chau) is no more, but her daughter Bian (Elise Ding) is still in play
Unless she appears in a flashback, which is unlikely, since one of HBO and Lindelof's hallmarks of this show is that actions have consequences, and this show is so well done that they don't want to ruin its good intentions by undoing the finale scene!
