Netflix wants to further enhance your streaming experience by adding a new Daily Top 10 feature that lists the most popular movies and TV shows in your country
In a blog post, the company announced that starting today it will roll out a new section on the home screen The top 10 rows will be updated daily with the most popular shows in the subscriber's country But what makes a Netflix show "popular"? More on that later
Netflix further displays a list of the top 10 shows and top 10 movies on each tab Also, the top 10 shows will have a special badge wherever they appear on Netflix
The streaming service began experimenting with the Top 10 feature last year in the UK and Mexico
"It could make title selection even easier for people who want to see what others are watching," CEO Reed Hastings told investors in April 2019
Both Netflix original and licensed content qualify for the top 10 list But big questions remain about how the service will tally popularity and ratings: when releasing information about its most-watched shows in 2019, Netflix said it counted accounts that watched at least two minutes of a title in the first 28 days after its release
In other words, last year the Adam Sandler comedy Murder Mystery was the #1 most watched movie However, this counted all Netflix users who watched it for two minutes and shut it down Similarly, it is difficult to determine whether the 76 million accounts that "decided to watch" The Witcher really spent significant time checking out this fantasy series
Also, with the introduction of the Top 10 column, will the Trends section be eliminated? Also, how were trends determined, if not by ratings?
Also, Netflix recently added an option for viewers to turn off autoplay of previews Such user experience upgrades show that Netflix is taking seriously the influx of competitors competing to be the best streaming service, such as Disney Plus
