Amidst growing concerns about Facebook's presence in our daily lives, the company has announced two new smart displays: the new portable Portal Go and the updated Portal+

According to a Facebook press release reported earlier by Engadget, the Portal Go is a 10-inch tablet, priced at $199, with a built-in battery that can be unplugged and moved around the house The next-generation Portal+ has a 14-inch HD tilting display and is priced at $349 Both models will ship on October 19 and can be pre-ordered through the Facebook portal

Facebook touts the Portal Go's 12MP front-facing smart camera for video calls; like FaceTime's face-tracking feature on the iPhone, the Portal's camera tracks your face as you walk around the frame for a more "immersive video call"

The Portal Go also doubles as a portable speaker, though Facebook did not reveal details about its quality However, the Portal Go boasts a solid screen resolution of 1280x800 and the entire unit is wrapped in fabric

Facebook claims that the Portal Go is capable of five hours of one-on-one messenger calls and 14 hours of music playback with the screen off This is good news, given that we liked the video quality of the second-generation Facebook Portal

The updated Portal+ also features a 12MP smart camera with an ultra-wide viewing angle; Facebook went out of its way to mention the unit's stereo speakers, suggesting that the Portal Go is all mono The Portal+ has a resolution of 2140x1440, which is considerably sharper than the Portal Go

Both Portal devices have lens covers, which may allay the concerns of privacy-conscious buyers The smart camera's artificial intelligence is processed on the device, so there is no need to link to an external server to process faces as they move

Of course, all WhatsApp calls are encrypted end-to-end, and encrypted messaging is currently being deployed in Messenger However, Messenger's end-to-end encryption must be manually enabled for specific contacts or groups
