Apple's AirPods 3 are set to be unveiled at an Apple event today (September 14), and there are reports that the latest version of Apple's wireless earbuds will come at a more expensive price point than its predecessor
The news comes from trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac), who claims that Apple will finally unveil a new version of its earphones at its September product event, its first since March 2019 The earbuds are expected to go on sale during or shortly after the event, so it looks like eager owners won't have to wait long to be able to get their hands on a pair
Kuo notes that because Apple will keep the AirPods 2 in its audio lineup, the newer AirPods will be more expensive than their predecessors, which currently cost $159 with a standard charging case and $249 with a wireless charging case
It is also possible that the AirPods 2 will be officially reduced in price, and if that happens, the AirPods 3 will adopt the current price point of the AirPods 2 Kuo, however, has kept this matter close to his chest and has not commented on which scenario is more likely
The AirPods 3 is expected to feature a new design heavily inspired by the AirPods Pro According to some leaked images, the refreshed earbuds will likely maintain the open design rather than feature interchangeable tips like the AirPods Pro offer, but with a shorter stem
They are also not expected to feature active noise cancellation Apple would like a reason for iOS owners to upgrade to the more premium AirPods Pro or AirPods Max Don't be surprised if sweat and water resistance will remain an AirPods Pro-only feature
Kuo also does not expect the AirPods Pro 2 to be unveiled at the September Apple event The most significant product expected to be unveiled at the event is the iPhone 13, but the Apple Watch 7 could also be introduced among other surprises
The annual fall Apple event will take place today, Tuesday, September 14, at 1 pm ET and will be streamed live on various platforms Keep it locked to Tom's Guide for complete coverage of the entire event
