It's hard to believe that just six months ago we saw the most advanced TV ever at CES 2023
From QD-OLED TVs that showed us that they could combine the highest black levels with 1,000 nits of brightness, to QLED TVs that honestly made us consider buying sunglasses for our living rooms, there is no shortage of great TVs to make our eyes go crazy
Below are some of the top classics of screens that have wowed the editors of Tom's Guide over the past six months For more categories and champions, see the full list of winners in Tom's Guide Awards 2023
Samsung's S95C OLED TV is the best TV to hit our bench in the past year and the best TV we've tested Samsung proved that QD-OLED (a technology that combines quantum dots and OLEDs) can brighten an OLED TV without compromising the perfect level of blacks in the imageThe One Connect box is a valuable solution for cable management, 144 for PC gaming Hz refresh rate and the built-in SmartThings hub make the S95C an excellent choice for a variety of needs If you are thinking about purchasing a new TV, Samsung's current generation OLEDs should be on your short list
Seeing that Samsung's S95C took the top spot, it is no surprise that Sony's Bravia XR A95K OLED TV took second place as the best OLED TV of the year Both use Samsung's QD-OLED panels, and both look amazing The Sony A95K brings world-class motion processing and color accuracy technology, as well as a wonderfully simple Google TV smart platform that is no match for Samsung's Tizen OS Samsung certainly has its own advantages, but if you are looking for similar performance in a Sony-branded TV, nothing beats the A95K
Samsung is again the king of QLED TVs with the Samsung QN90C Neo QLED TV, an impressive set featuring mini LEDs For those who don't know, Mini-LED backlighting delivers high levels of brightness while maintaining realistic color and brightness gradients; the QN90C offers exceptional HDR brightness, a wide range of sizes, stable upscaling, and ample support for a variety of content, It has almost everything you would expect from a premium 4K Mini LED TV In addition, the rechargeable remote control and versatile interface are something we think customers will appreciate when they get their hands on the best QLED TV of the year
Not all TVs need to cost thousands of dollars For example, the Roku Plus series of 4K QLED TVs: for about the price of a PlayStation 5, you can get a TV with excellent brightness and color saturation, running the simple but not basic Roku TV smart platform, HDMI 21 ports, native 60Hz panel, and other latest and greatest TV technology, but with Dolby Vision support, the Roku Plus offers an irresistible experience for movie buffs At this price point, nothing beats the Roku Plus series
It may not have a QD-OLED panel like the Sony A95K, but the Sony A80L offers the high picture quality expected of an OLED and the surprisingly good sound you might not expect the A80L has one thin 1/4" panel mounted to a thick, rear It is merely mounted on a control box The previously mentioned sound quality Expect pristine clarity all the way up to the maximum volume level Clarion and distortion-free treble is fine even when singing high notes at high volume levels Powerful, chest-pounding bass is reminiscent of an invisible subwoofer installed beneath an entertainment center Dialogue, music, and complex sound effects all intertwine in just the right balance We almost always recommend buying a soundbar with a new 4K TV But Sony's A80L finally showed us that you really don't need one
Just when we thought premium TVs couldn't get any better, LG proved us wrong: the LG G3 OLED TV revolutionized the TV market this year with a new micro lens on the OLED panel This lens dramatically improved not only brightness, but also image uniformity; when we observed the LG G3's off-angle, pure white screen, there was no reduction in overall brightness or color volume On last year's LG G2, the same image lost brightness when viewed at an angle, and some areas of white turned a very subtle gray; without seeing the improvement side-by-side with the G3, I probably would not have had a problem viewing the G2 from an angle up, which is quite incredible
The Samsung QN900C Neo QLED 8K TV is so loaded with features that it stands out as the best 8K TV this year While other manufacturers are focusing on producing 8K TVs, Samsung has delivered its most advanced 8K TV to date with the QN900C High peak brightness This TV knows how to shine Ultimate gaming screen This TV supports HDMI 21 and has other gamer-friendly features Superior upscaling, black levels, color, and built-in sound Tick, tick, tick; the QN900C is the most premium TV on the market today
TCL's six series have won awards every year, and this year is no different We can't help but love TCL's affordable flagship TVs that bring some of the best features of their high-end models to screens that the average person can afford For gamers, this year's 6 Series is particularly impressive, being one of the first TVs to support VRR and 144Hz on two of its HDMI 21 ports; add AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support and 101ms latency and you have one of the best gaming TVs one of the best gaming TVs out there If your goal is to maximize the cost of your TV purchase, $999 is a small price to pay for a TV as feature-rich as the TCL R655
Any TV that excels in terms of picture quality, sound quality, and content features is impressive, but regular OLED and QLED TVs have one major limitation: screen size if you're looking for a 100+ inch screen that won't cost $25,000 (or more), a Hisense L9H 4K Laser TV might be the perfect fit This short-throw projector can be placed near a wall to change the shape of the projected image, making the image appear as a normal rectangle on the wall or projection screen, despite its position The image can reach 100 or 120 inches, depending on the unit, making it possible to bring a large-screen experience to any room with sufficient wall space
