5 Paramount Plus new movies over 90% at Rotten Tomatoes

Paramount Plus has just acquired a large collection of new films for March 2024, and this month's list includes a handful of critically acclaimed must-see films

Many of the new releases added to the streaming service's library are likely to appear on Paramount Plus' Best Movies list This month's best new releases include one of the most romantic films ever made (don't @ me), a legendary spoof comedy, and a Coen Brothers film featuring one of Nicolas Cage's best performances ever (seriously, don't @ me) Included

It would take quite a bit of time to sort through the entire list of new Paramount Plus releases, so to make it easier to pick out the true gems, we'll pick out five films that scored at least 90% or higher on the comprehensive review site Rotten Tomatoes

One of the most famous and oft-cited films in comedy film history, "Airplane"

This farcical comedy, a spoof of disaster movies, especially 1957's "Zero Hour," features iconic comedic performances by Robert Hayes, Julie Haggerty, Leslie Nielsen and is still utterly hilarious today It also spawned a lot of online memes, so don't be surprised if you recognize some of the scenes even if you've never seen it

The bare-bones plot is merely a vehicle for plenty of silly gags, but it's a story about Ted Stryker (Hayes), a veteran with a phobia of flying and a drinking problem (he's not an alcoholic, he just has trouble drinking liquids), and his ex-girlfriend (Haggerty), a member of the flight crew In order to get her back, he boards a plane from Los Angeles to Chicago During the flight, a passenger and crew member suffer from debilitating food poisoning, and Stryker must confront his fears and land the plane safely Some of the current events have become dated, but other than that, "Airplane" is silly and fun to this day

Perhaps the most hauntingly romantic film I've ever seen, Carol, directed by Todd Haynes, is about a forbidden romance between two women in 1950s New York City The drama is not only beautifully shot and dreamily soothing from start to finish, but also features two powerful performances by Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara

Set during the holiday season, department store worker Therese Belivet (Mara) meets an attractive older woman, Carol Aird (Blanchett), and is immediately smitten However, the two are attracted to each other and a romance develops, but the situation is complicated by Carol's ongoing divorce from her husband, Harge (Kyle Chandler), and the social pressures of the time Although a little bittersweet at times, "Carol" remains an enchanting love story that will stay with you

As vital in 2024 as it was when it first aired more than 35 years ago, the legal drama "The Accused" follows a 1983 New Bedford, Massachusetts man who is accused by a group of four based in part on the harrowing true story of a young woman who was sexually assaulted by four men in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1983 The attack made national headlines, and this (loosely) cinematic retelling sheds light on the injustice faced by many women in our society, an issue that continues to this day

Jodie Foster won an Oscar for her portrayal of Sarah Tobias, a young woman brutally raped by men in a local bar Sarah has a complicated past and was deemed unreliable as a witness because she was drunk at the time, and the district attorney (Kelly McGillis) was initially reluctant to fully prosecute the perpetrators Sarah, however, does not give up, and despite the odds, she pursues justice and fights back against the legal system

A comedic folk drama, "Inside Llewyn Davis" is often thought of as a rather dark film, but this melancholic tale has a sincere heart Written and directed by husband-and-wife team Joel and Ethan Coen, the two cinematic geniuses boast a wealth of talent behind the camera as well as in front of it Starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Adam Driver, and Justin Timberlake, the film features arguably the best performances of all time

"Inside Llewyn Davis" follows a week in the life of a young folk singer in the early 1960s Llewyn Davis (Isaacs) lives in Greenwich Village, New York, with no money to live on, couch surfing and relying on his few friends But as he tries to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of his dream of becoming a successful musician, he comes face to face with the fact that sometimes the biggest hurdles in life are those we create for ourselves

"Raising Arizona" was another Coen brothers project, with Joel solely directing and the siblings both writing crime comedy films Lighter in tone than their previous film, the 1984 thriller "Blood Simple," "Raising Arizona" finds the Coen brothers at their comedic best, full of witty dialogue exchanges and memorable characters

A reformed thug robber named Herbert (Nicolas Cage) and a policewoman named Edwina (Holly Hunter) marry and devise a witty plan to kidnap one of the five children born to a local businessman John Goodman and Frances McDormand, frequent collaborators with the Coen brothers, also star
