A "Game of Thrones" prequel is in the works - here's what we know

Things are busy in the world of Westeros While we eagerly await the release date for "House of Dragons" Season 2 (according to series star Matt Smith, "Summer 2024" will have to suffice for now), we are also getting plenty of news about the "Game of Thrones" prequel

We've already heard about HBO's developing series about Aegon the Conqueror (you know, the man who founded the Targaryen dynasty and conquered the continent of Westeros), which is a direct prequel to "The House of Dragons," a century before the events of "HOTD" when Aegon's Seven Kingdoms and will reportedly depict his "bloody and brutal conquest" of the Seven Kingdoms

Similarly, "The Hedge Knight," another recently announced spin-off series based on George RR Martin's "The Tales of Dunk and Egg" trilogy, is also based on "Game of Thrones" and " A Song of Fire and Ice," a fantasy series that inspired both "House of the Dragon" and takes place about 100 years before the events of "A Song of Fire and Ice" HBO has announced that it has received a full season order for this prequel as a "straight-to-series" (and failed unlike the "Blood Moon" prequel, which ended up on the small screen) will actually air on the small screen

So what exactly is "The Hedge Knight" about? HBO's official description of this new prequel reads: 100 years before "Game of Thrones," two unlikely heroes wander Westeros: Ser Duncan the Tall, a young, naïve but brave knight, and his diminutive squire, Egg In a time when House Targaryen still reigns on the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet faded from living memory, great fates, powerful enemies, and dangerous adventures await these unlikely and unsurpassed friends

Super-fans of "GOT" may recall that Sir Duncan, aka "Dunk," would later serve as Commander of the Kingsguard to a certain Targaryen King! [Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav told The Hollywood Reporter about when we can expect a "Hedge Knight" series: "[Creator and executive producer] George RR Martin is in pre-production on a new spin-off So far, no official casting has been announced, so we'll all have to dream-cast who we think will play Dunk and Egg in the new series Tom's Guide will keep you up to date with news on "Game of Thrones" related projects currently in development by HBO, including a "The Hedge Knight" prequel and a spin-off focusing on Aegon the Conqueror In the meantime, Westeros fans can revisit both "Game of Thrones" and "House of Dragons" by streaming the fantasy series on their Max subscriptions
