With February just around the corner, here are the new movies coming to Netflix, Max, Prime Video, and other major streaming services this week
Topping the slate is "Poor Things" This Academy Award-nominated masterpiece is one of the best movies of 2023 and will be the top movie available for streaming this week You'll have to buy or rent it through a pay-per-view video-on-demand (PVOD) streaming service, but I promise you it's money well spent
Aside from that, we have a solid mix of films The Salt Burn was one of the more controversial films of the last year Meanwhile, with "Napoleon" finally coming to Apple TV Plus and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" coming to Max, we have two blockbusters to enjoy with your popcorn this week
Some of these titles are new digital releases and can be purchased at premium prices, while others require the appropriate streaming subscription And while you're here, don't forget to check out the best of the new TV shows and new Netflix shows to watch from streamers this week
Here are the top new movies streaming this week
The film certainly plays homage to Frankenstein's monster, but it's more of a surreal comedy than a body horror film Emma Stone plays Bella Baxter, brought back (from the dead) by a mad scientist god (Willem Dafoe) She has minimal intelligence, but as it grows, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery
The film definitely lives up to Lanthimos' brand of weird cinema and is one of the best films I've seen in 2023 Stone's performance is certainly Oscar-worthy and is one of many performances If you get the chance, see it

For Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa, this movie may be it The film has been heavily criticized by critics, and it is unclear if it will fit into James Gunn's plans for the DC Comics film universe In addition, there are personal issues with co-star Amber Heard, and even if Momoa continues as the King of Atlantis, he will almost certainly need some new co-stars around him
Despite this, audiences liked Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom The audience "fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes was 81%, which is objectively quite good Definitely better than the critics' 34%
So if you are a fan of Aquaman, played by Momoa, this movie may be for you Either way, there are worse ideas than launching Max this week to see Aquaman, his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), and Atlantis take on the evil Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II)

Full disclosure, I did not like this movie It's plodding in the beginning, it can't decide what kind of movie it's trying to be, it feels provocative for the sake of being provocative, it was one of my least favorite movies of 2023, and I'm not sure I'd have liked it if I hadn't seen it
That said, it is genuinely weird So if you like that, this movie might be for you And you won't be alone On Rotten Tomatoes, 79% of the audience gave it a favorable rating, and the critics are not far behind And after all, Rosamund Pike is an absolute delight, and almost every line she says will make you laugh in a movie that might feel uncomfortable at most moments in the film
If you want to see Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi enjoying summer on the grounds of a sprawling English mansion, you can finally buy or rent "Saltburn" starting today (it's available for streaming in early December if you subscribe to Prime Video)

The film is a darling of the 2023 festival circuit and won multiple awards when it debuted at Cannes What began as a film about potential student-teacher abuse evolved into something more complex
"Monster" is not for the faint of heart, nor is it a popcorn movie The film features a unique structure in which the story is told three times, each time from the protagonist's point of view, which has a subversive effect Also, since the entire film is in Japanese, there is no English dubbing, making this a film for subtitlers

"A horny, absurd American odyssey That's one of the complaints of critics promoting "Sweet East," and after watching the trailer, I'm inclined to agree, at least with the "absurd" part The film stars Talia Ryder as Lillian, a high school senior
who is separated from her classmates after a shooting at a Washington, DC pizza parlor In addition to Ryder, the cast also includes Ayo Edebiri (as Molly) and Jacob Elordi (as Ian), among other acting talents If you want something absurd but are not in the mood for "Salt Burn," this movie may be just right for you

The film is a sci-fi actioner about Connor Reid (Robbie Amell) who uses his psychic powers to help a group of criminals led by Garrett Kelton (Stephen Amell) so that Connor can take care of his mother The film is a sequel to 2019's Code 8 In this sequel, Garrett works with corrupt cops to take control of the fictional Lincoln City After her brother is killed, a young girl learns of it and asks Connor, who is being chased by the police, to help and protect her
The original film earned an 81% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and early reviews of this sequel are positive If you like superhero movies and dystopian stories, this movie is a must-see on Netflix this week

Ridley Scott's historical drama starring Joaquin Phoenix You can't help but love it After all, the two teamed up for 2000's "Gladiator," which produced one of the best performances of Phoenix's career
Unfortunately, this biopic about the legendary French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte didn't seem to be as uplifting as the duo's Best Picture winner, but that's okay The acting is as great as ever, and there are some incredible action set pieces However, at 157 minutes long, it is sometimes hard to connect the dots Fortunately, you can always pause it at home
Streaming on Apple TV Plus starting March 1
One of my most anticipated films at the recent Berlin International Film Festival, "Spaceman" stars Adam Sandler as Commander Jakub Prochazka This Czech astronaut is assigned a solo mission to explore a mysterious, ancient cloud of dust that has appeared in our solar system In the vastness of space, he encounters an extraterrestrial spider named Hanush (Paul Dano)
The film has received mixed reviews, at least from critics It currently has a "fresh" rating of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not bad but not good However, the rating from audiences is an astounding 100% Apparently, the film is either introspective or boring Still, it is one of the most promising films released this week
Available on Netflix beginning March 1
Shea Height became a controversial feminist icon in the 1970s due to her scholarly work in the field of female sexuality However, by the late 1980s she had largely disappeared from public life, eventually renouncing even her US citizenship in reaction to her research
Narrated by Dakota Johnson, "The Disappearance of Cher Heit" examines the life of the once prominent feminist figure who is now largely out of the news Don't miss this acclaimed documentary, now available on AMC Plus
Available on AMC Plus on March 1
Casey Affleck and Walton Goggins star as Donnie and Joe Emerson in the film, based on the true story of the discovery of their album "Dreamin' Wild" decades after its 1970s release The film is based on the true story of the discovery of their album Dreamin' Wild decades after its release in the 1970s [Dreamin' Wild (film) debuted at the Venice International Film Festival in 2022 But the sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking content of finally finding success after decades of pain and perseverance still resonates Perhaps it is fitting that this film about the joy of finding a lost gem and bringing it back to life took several years to become a top streaming movie
Available on Hulu March 1
The comedy-drama stars Leah McKendrick as Nellie, a 34-year-old single woman who decides to freeze her eggs after experiencing a breakup and diminishing prospects for a stable, long-term relationship She is also a stand-in for McKendrick's real-life egg retrieval experience in 2021
"Scramble," which opened on February 2, did not do well at the box office, but those who saw it seemed to like it The Rotten Tomatoes critic rating was 94% "fresh" and the audience rating was not far behind at 92% If you want to see a quirky but touching comedy this week, this is it
