Good news, “Sugar” fans, the blistering mystery series on Apple TV Plus is returning to our screens
The news comes courtesy of Variety, which confirmed that John Sugar, played by Farrell, will take on a new case in the detective show starring Colin Farrell
The genre-defying first season was about a private investigator specializing in the search for missing persons and confronting his personal demons while investigating the granddaughter of Hollywood tycoon producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell)
The official synopsis for Season 2 does not say much, but confirms that “Sugar will return to Los Angeles to take on another missing persons case as she continues to search for answers surrounding her missing sister”
Commenting on the renewal, Matt Charnis, head of programming for Apple TV Plus, said: since its initial airing, viewers have been enthralled by the mystery and development of “Sugar,”
centered around Colin Farrell's stellar performance
“Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chung, and the entire team behind the series have successfully blended genres to create an engaging series that never disappoints viewers' expectations
For those who have not yet experienced “Sugar,” this series is recommended in its own right
On Rotten Tomatoes, the series is “Certified Fresh” and currently boasts an 81% critic rating and 78% viewer rating The site's critical consensus is this: “A modern noir in the classic tradition, ‘Sugar’ could use stronger cues along with its ample style, but Colin Farrell's cool performance keeps it compelling”
A quick look at the critics' reviews of the show shows that many critics enjoyed their time with it, except that many felt that “Sugar” took too long to set everything up However, fellow “Tom's Guide” writer Malcolm McMullan ranked “Sugar” as one of the worst shows he has seen this year (as of July 2024), so take that recommendation with at least a pinch of salt
Now, if you haven't caught up with “Sugar” yet and want to know what made it stand out, I have to spoil the big surprise, so if you haven't caught up and still want to stream “Sugar,” look away now! !!!
Well, here's where we come in Midway through the season, “Sugar” took a wild turn when the titular detective was actually a blue-skinned alien dressed up as a classic Hollywood-era-obsessed private detective To make matters worse, he learns that some of his fellow aliens are in cahoots with the bad guys
There is still very little information about “Sugar” Season 2, so stay tuned for casting announcements and, of course, a release date And if you need help finding your next show while you wait for more news on “Sugar” Season 2, check out our guide to the best Apple TV Plus shows you should be streaming right now
