Halloween favorites rank in Netflix's top 10 - but only one is worth watching

October has officially kicked off Halloween month (aka spooky season) It is not surprising to see the interest in scary stuff reflected in the most-watched lists of some of the best streaming services, and that includes Netflix

As of October 3, two horror films have made it into Netflix's top 10 Currently, “It Chapter 2” is in third place behind the persistent favorite “Jailbreak”: currently, “It Chapter 2” is in third place alongside newcomer “Escape Plan” and behind “Love on the Run” and “The Garfield Movie” The 2018 “Halloween” reboot is also in eighth place, ahead of “The Super Mario Brothers Movie”

Netflix offers a wealth of horror favorites, but it is these two films that are drawing the most interest from subscribers looking to get into the mood for the season I have mixed feelings, however One is a huge success, but the other is more frustrating than scary So here are the films that should be streamed and the ones that should be skipped

John Carpenter's “Halloween” is the holy grail for horror fans While not the first slasher, it is arguably one of the most influential and ranks high on the list of horror masterpieces, and as with Rob Zombie's 2007 flop, attempting to remake or re-imagine such a revered film is a dangerous game [So when director David Gordon Green and screenwriter Danny McBride teamed up for a sequel that would be a legacy that ignores the continuity mess that has occurred since the 1978 original, expectations were not exactly high The return of lead actor Jamie Lee Curtis gave us a glimmer of hope, but we were still (very pleasantly) surprised by the quality of the final product

“Halloween” (2018) follows the same basic blueprint as its predecessor, with the masked and murdered Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) escaping from an extreme prison and once again roaming the streets of Haddonfield, where he meets Laurie Strode ( carving a bloody course on his way to a showdown with Jamie Lee Curtis) The story may not have evolved much, but the tense atmosphere is as effective as ever

Also, Myers' kill is particularly brutal and will have some audience members cringing And it leads to a satisfying finale (many sequels fail in this regard) that gives fans the Rory vs Michael rematch they've been waiting decades for It's a reboot done right, and if you're looking for a chiller to kick off the Halloween season, this film is just the ticket

Be sure to skip the sequels “Halloween Kills” and “Halloween's End,” however

One disappointing sequel is “It, Chapter Two” An adaptation of the “grown-up” portion of Stephen King's original novel, it reunites the members of the self-proclaimed “Losers Club” in the town of Derry, Maine, to finally put an end to the evil entity--often in the form of a dancing clown--that haunted them as children

While the first “It” film rode on the success of “Stranger Things” (the Netflix show itself was partially inspired by Stephen King's work), the sequel never quite captured that same youthful energy At the very least, the casting of James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Hader is top-notch, and they are excellent choices to play grown-up versions of the young roles they played in the first “It” film Bill Skarsgård also gives another phenomenal performance as Pennywise, the returning clown

The film's biggest failing is its enormous running time: at just ten minutes shy of three hours, “It, Chapter Two” fails to maintain narrative momentum, and while some sequences do add to the creepiness, when stretched to such a long running time the oppressive atmosphere The film is not a fast-paced film This is not a fast-paced film

If you are a big Stephen King fan, or if you are a fan of his first film, “It” (which, strangely enough, is not available on Netflix However, unless you have a lot of movie-going time to spare, I would recommend skipping this one It is simply too boring to recommend

While “Halloween” and “It, Chapter 2” are making a splash on Netflix, horror films are also surging in popularity on other streaming platforms So, for those looking to expand their options, here are five Halloween movies available for streaming on Prime Video
