Apple's Glowtime event was fairly thin on Apple Watch content, with only the new Apple Watch Series 10 and the satin black Apple Watch Ultra 2 being revealed What we did not see was a new version of the lower-priced Apple Watch SE, which was rumored to come with a plastic shell However, this does not mean that it will not appear
Mark Garman claims that development of this lower-priced smartwatch is “still underway,” and sources tell Bloomberg reporters that it could appear sometime next year Garman did not go into further details, only stating that Apple is facing cost and quality issues due to a possible switch to plastic So those hoping to get the new Apple Watch SE will have to wait patiently
The first Apple Watch SE was released in 2020, with an updated version coming in 2022; 2024 seemed like an obvious time for Apple to release a third-generation model, but it appears that will not happen Another Apple event is rumored to be held next month, but since the focus is expected to be on the iPad and the M4-powered Mac, it would not be an appropriate place to announce a new wearable
Garman also noted that a lack of hardware upgrades has caused problems for the Apple Watch line and that the company may be considering switching to a two-year upgrade cycle That may be why the Apple Watch Ultra 3 does not yet exist, but it is not why the Apple Watch SE 3 does not yet exist
It may be that Apple Watch SE 3 manufacturing just hasn't caught up yet
Garman previously reported that Apple has switched from a metal chassis to a high-grade plastic one, claiming that the manufacturing team is having cost and quality issues as a result
It is also claimed that Apple is considering 3D printing these shells instead of traditional molding methods, but so far the manufacturing capacity is not ready yet; given how time consuming 3D printing is, don't expect that to change anytime soon
So, if you specifically want a new Apple Watch, you will need to purchase the Apple Watch Series 10, which will be released on September 20 Alternatively, a price drop for the Apple Watch Series 9 is inevitable once the new model is released
