Today marks 10 years since Apple first introduced the Apple Watch And - wouldn't you know it - coincidentally, Apple's event is also being held today at Apple Park And while the iPhone 16 series will almost certainly be the star of the show, the most premium Apple Watch may not be at the event
Widespread speculation that Apple would unveil the Apple Watch Ultra 3 at today's “Glowtime” event appears to have been quashed by Bloomberg's resident Apple tipster, Mark Gurman Gurman says Apple will not unveil the Watch Ultra 3 at today's event, but will instead unveil the Apple Watch Ultra 2 in a black titanium color
If true, that leaves room for the almost certain Apple Watch 10 (or Apple Watch X) and the rumored Apple Watch SE 3 to fill today's wearables news
Other sources have been inconsistent about Apple's Ultra 3 plans Earlier this year, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo argued that we should not expect an Apple Watch Ultra 3 this year because Cupertino is working on “innovative health management features” and needs more time Since then, however, Kuo has changed course, suggesting that the Apple Wath Ultra 3 will likely be released in September 2024
Amazon seems to think that a new Apple Watch Ultra is on the way This is because the retailer is currently heavily discounting the Apple Watch Ultra 2, presumably to shift inventory Currently, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is down to $689 on Amazon
The biggest reason the Apple Watch Ultra 3 may be delayed is its reported new health features These are believed to be sleep apnea detection, blood glucose monitoring, and blood pressure measurement The last two, in particular, may have been put on the fast track because of the court battle between Apple and Masimo over the blood oxygen level monitor
The ability to detect sleep apnea (a common but serious sleep disorder characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep) could be a really useful health feature for Ultra 3 And it is thought to work with an upgraded ECG sensor that could pick up more accurate results But development will obviously take time
Thus, if Gurman is correct, Apple may have decided to focus on the Series 10 this year and delay the Apple Watch Ultra 3 for another 12 months That would allow time for a larger, more detailed upgrade than the initial Apple Watch Ultra to Ultra 2 upgrade
Meanwhile, the introduction of a black titanium finish will be the first new color option seen on the Ultra variant While the standard Apple Watch comes in a variety of sizes and colors, the Ultra and Ultra 2 stick to the 49mm case size and titanium color
At least we won't have to wait too long to find out Apple's Glowtime event is set to begin at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET / 6 pm BST, and you can follow all the announcements on our live blog here
